Best Desserts in Osaka: Isshindo Fruit Mochi at Hankyu Umeda
(+ What to Try!)

If you love discovering delicious desserts while traveling in Japan, Osaka is definitely a city you won’t want to miss! From traditional Japanese sweets to beautifully decorated cakes, there’s something tempting around every corner.

During my recent trip to Osaka, I discovered a wonderful fruit mochi shop called Isshindo (一心堂) inside the famous Hankyu Umeda Department Store.

And let me tell you something…

The premium peach mochi was absolutely incredible!

I’ve tried plenty of delicious desserts in Japan, but this one really stood out.

If you’re looking for the best desserts in Umeda, here’s my honest review of Isshindo’s fruit daifuku, including which flavors I recommend and a few useful tips before visiting.

1. Discovering Isshindo While Exploring Umeda

One thing I quickly noticed while exploring Umeda is how convenient the underground shopping passages are. Major department stores like Hankyu, Hanshin, and Daimaru are connected through the underground network around Osaka and Umeda stations.
You can spend hours shopping without having to walk outside very much.

And if you’re visiting Osaka during the hot summer months, trust me, those underground passages are a lifesaver!

That’s exactly how I ended up at Hankyu Umeda Department Store.

The basement food hall is practically a paradise for food lovers.
There are countless shops selling traditional Japanese sweets, pastries, cakes, chocolates, and all kinds of delicious treats.

But one particular shop caught my attention.
It was Isshindo, a Japanese confectionery shop specializing in fresh fruit mochi.

2. Where to Find Isshindo at Hankyu Umeda

Isshindo is known for its fruit daifuku, a traditional Japanese sweet made with soft, chewy mochi wrapped around fresh fruit.

Unlike ordinary mochi, these treats feature generous pieces of fruit, making them incredibly juicy and refreshing.

Here’s where to find the shop.

Isshindo Hankyu Umeda Store

  • Shop name: Isshindo (一心堂)
  • Location: Hankyu Umeda Main Store, Basement 1 (B1)
  • Address: 8-7 Kakudacho, Kita-ku, Osaka, Japan
  • Nearest stations: Osaka Station and Osaka-Umeda Station
  • Opening hours: Follow the department store’s business hours

If you’re already planning to shop around Umeda, it’s an easy place to add to your itinerary.
You don’t need to make a separate trip just for dessert!

3. So Many Fruit Mochi Flavors to Choose From!

When I arrived at Isshindo, I was surprised by how many different flavors were available.
There were beautiful fruit daifuku filled with strawberries, peaches, melons, and other seasonal fruits. Everything looked so delicious that I couldn’t decide what to buy.
Seriously, choosing was harder than I expected! LOL.

While I was standing there trying to make up my mind, one of the staff members kindly showed me the menu.

After much consideration, I finally chose four flavors:

  • Mandarin Orange Mochi
  • Premium Peach Mochi
  • Red Melon Mochi
  • Berry Berry Mochi

My plan was simple.
Buy a few different flavors, grab a coffee nearby, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon snack.
Sounds perfect, right?

Well… things didn’t go exactly as planned!

4. My Little Starbucks Mistake in Japan

After buying our fruit mochi, we headed to a nearby Starbucks.
I was already imagining how wonderful it would be to enjoy sweet, juicy mochi with a nice cup of coffee.

But then I discovered something.

You can’t eat outside food inside Starbucks in Japan!

Oops!

To be fair, many coffee shops in Korea have the same rule, so I probably should have known better. Haha. We ended up drinking our coffee at Starbucks and eating the mochi outside afterward.

Not quite the relaxing dessert experience I had imagined!

And because we were eating outside, I didn’t manage to take as many pretty photos as I wanted.

But honestly?
The mochi tasted so good that I completely forgot about the photos.
Especially one particular flavor…

5. My Favorite: Premium Peach Mochi

If there’s only one thing you try at Isshindo, make it the Premium Peach Mochi!

Seriously, I cannot recommend this one enough.
The moment I took my first bite, I was amazed by how juicy the peach was.
Sweet peach juice practically burst into my mouth!
The fruit was incredibly fresh, soft, and naturally sweet.

I’m not exaggerating when I say it was probably the best peach I had eaten that year.
And when you combine that juicy peach with the soft, chewy mochi…

Oh my goodness.
It was absolutely delicious!

What impressed me most was that the peach itself was the star of the dessert.
Sometimes fruit desserts rely heavily on cream or extra sweetness, but this one didn’t need anything else.
The natural sweetness of the peach was more than enough.

If you love peaches, this is a must-try dessert in Osaka.

Honestly, if I visit Hankyu Umeda again, the first thing I’ll look for is Isshindo’s Premium Peach Mochi.

6. My Second Favorite: Red Melon Mochi

My second recommendation is the Red Melon Mochi.
If you’ve never tried red-fleshed melon, it’s a type of melon with beautiful orange-colored flesh.
The flavor was familiar rather than surprising, but it tasted like a perfectly ripe, sweet melon.
The fruit was soft, juicy, and refreshing.

It wasn’t quite as unforgettable as the premium peach, but I still really enjoyed it.
I also loved how beautiful the orange-colored fruit looked inside the mochi.
If you’re a melon lover, this is definitely worth trying.

And yes, I even took a photo of the inside of the mochi to show how much fruit was packed into it.

Let’s just say the photo wasn’t exactly Instagram-perfect! LOL.
But at least you can see how generous the fruit filling was.

7. Useful Tips Before Buying Fruit Mochi at Isshindo

After trying several flavors, here are a few things I’d recommend keeping in mind.

Try more than one flavor.

One of the best things about Isshindo is the variety of fruit daifuku available.
If you’re traveling with family or friends, buying a few different flavors to share is a fun way to discover your favorites.

Look out for seasonal fruit.

Some flavors, including peach and melon, may depend on the season.
The selection might be different when you visit, so check what’s available in the display case.

Plan where you’ll eat your mochi.

As I learned the hard way, you can’t assume that nearby cafés will allow outside food.
If you’re planning to enjoy your dessert with coffee, check the café’s rules first.

Enjoy it while it’s fresh.

Since these sweets contain fresh fruit, it’s best to follow the shop’s storage instructions and enjoy them as fresh as possible.

8. Is Isshindo Worth Visiting in Umeda?

For me, absolutely!
I love desserts that aren’t overly heavy or sweet, and Isshindo’s fruit mochi was exactly what I was looking for.
The combination of fresh, juicy fruit and soft, chewy mochi was wonderful.

And the premium peach?

I still think about it!

If you’re exploring the Umeda shopping district or visiting Hankyu Department Store, I highly recommend stopping by the basement food hall.

There are so many delicious Japanese desserts to discover, but Isshindo is a great choice if you enjoy fresh fruit.

My personal favorites:

1st place: Premium Peach Mochi 🍑

Incredibly juicy, naturally sweet, and absolutely delicious.

2nd place: Red Melon Mochi 🍈

Soft, refreshing, and full of ripe melon flavor.

Next time I’m in Osaka, I’ll definitely be heading back for another peach mochi!

If you’re searching for a delicious Japanese dessert in Umeda, be sure to add Isshindo to your Osaka food itinerary.

Happy travels and happy eating!
